Ten years, nobody who starts a web site can honestly claim to have an accurate vision of what that site will be like ten years down the line. When I wrote my first digital camera article and dropped it onto the now defunct photo.askey.net URL I had no intentions for it to be anything more than an opinion piece of my purchase. But then a funny thing happened, I began getting emails, lots of them, all asking about my article and what I thought of other cameras. It seemed that this "digital camera thing" was becoming popular and what people were looking for was a site which was always up to date and could deliver honest, detailed reviews. I went out on a limb and spoke to several manufactures, to my surprise the majority were extremely receptive and before I knew what was happening I had a steady flow of cameras coming my way. Over the next couple of years I developed the primary site features (camera database, forums, news, etc.) as well as gradually improving the testing methodology (but at all times trying to be consistent).
The hard work began to pay off, we saw our visitor figures skyrocket; 3 million page views per month after a year, 11 million after two years, today we serve around 140 million pages per month to over 7 million unique visitors (or about 24 million visitor sessions if you prefer). In 2004 having done virtually a hundred hours a week for five years I decided getting some help may be a good idea and was extremely lucky to hire someone with a long standing digital camera review pedigree; Simon Joinson. In 2006 I was approached by Amazon to discuss potential acquisition, for me, and for the site, this was actually perfect timing, we were massively resource limited, needing a new office, more staff, more development and new infrastructure. In the eighteen months since the deal was signed the way we work has changed completely, we now have a large dedicated office and studio, totally new server infrastructure (hosted in the same facility as Amazon) as well as four camera reviews, a lens reviewer, a studio assistant / news author and two (soon to be three) developers.
Naturally I'm very proud of how far we've come, but I am also aware (especially in tough times such as these) that the need to constantly innovate and change never goes away, proof of this can be seen in our recent group test series which is a totally new format to dpreview but has been delivered to perfection by Simon and the team. You should also expect to see a lot of new development next year, not least of which our new Challenges system which we'll be launching into public beta on 29th December.

Hear Hear!
You've done a grand job with the site so far Phil, you & the rest of the staff have all been very helpful with your reviews, & allow me to congratulate you for the same! Job well done!
Cheers & Happy Solstice to you all...

Thanks a lot for this great site. Hope there will be 10 more years :)

This site is great!
And the last two features - the lens reviews and group tests are awesome. Couldn't be bothered about every compact in the market so the group test serves perfect for knowing the best of the bunch.
And I dream that one day you'll have a huuuuge lens review database. The widget kicks ass. You could even test some older lenses using adapters.
Thanks for the great site and keep it up!

This site is becoming more and more an international place for photography instead of only for camera info. A wonderful thing to see. Whishing the whole team all the best for the New Year and many years to come.

Clearly the world's largest photographic site! In 10 years.
The feeling may be similar to climbing a huge mountain, and then looking down at the landscape from the top.
The top? But can this be the top when so many things are expected to follow?
Happy birthday Dpreview!

In the last few years I've bought several cameras, and all of them were from your truly "highly recommended" stable (excluding those that had to be there just for their brand). Canon, Minolta, Nikon, Panasonic...
Either I got great eye when picking, or DPreview is my most trusted source when choosing what to buy.
Thank you Phil & the gang, keep it up for ten times more years. At least!

10 years of age... I heard that we learn all the necessary things in life by the age of six. Of course you add refinement in life as you grow older, but the essentials you learn already at the age of six. Congratulation dpreview! Carry on your life with the essence acquired by the age of six.

Here in Québec, many Québécois (and french cannadian) have respect to your site and take good advises from it.
From the other site of the ocean!
Merry Christmas and happy Ney Year. Don't forget, ;-) a lot of reviews for your all readers.

Coo - any chance of updating the old Kodak DCS 520 review? It was the first digital SLR featured on the site, and was hugely, highly, most unreservedly etc recommended. I've been poring over the article this past few weeks on account of having recently bought a Canon D2000, and it's fascinating to compare such an ancient thing with modern technology (it's vastly better than the digital compacts of 1998 but it's still shocking that it cost $15,000).

Phil,
You've been a hard-working, innovative visionary. You've given those of us who love photography a great site to come together and learn from each other.
Merry Christmas to you and all yours. I also want to wish you continued success with this site as well as all your other endeavors.
Cheers,
Michael

Happy Anniversary and Merry Christmas.Dear Phil ; Thank you and your staff for serving as an invaluable source of camera information , wit and above all objective, inciteful reviews since my first digital purchases almost 8 years ago . To Dpreview & Phil, I have always wanted to express my gratitude and I guess this is a perfect time. I have been a member for about 8 years. Till about 5 years ago, I didn't know what a ISO, aperture nor metering was. After countless hours of studying the material on the site and asking all kinds of questions on the forum, I am now a successful photographer making a 6 figure income.
When I picked up my first camera, the Canon S10, I knew I wanted to do nothing else. I have come a long way since the S10 but I am still asking countless question on the forum, learning every single day.
You have provided my career for me.
Happy Anniversary, Merry Christmas and........thank you!
Peter

I will be your visitor for the next ten years.
Thank you!

Phil,
I'd like to tell you that you have done such a wonderful job during this 10 years, and I feel that me myself owe you so much. I saw this site about 3 years ago and I knew nothing about digital cameras then, since then I've been constantly reading your reviews and visiting the forums and there's not even a single day that I connect to internet and I do not visit your site. I can even claim that thanks to your site now I'm a camera expert myself, haha!! You totally changed our vision to digital photography and I belive that today you even have certain influence on camera manufacturers and I'm sure that your reviews and critics are even important for them.
I'm so grateful Phil,
Wish you happy hollidays,
and Merry Christmas !! :)

What else could we add, your story is a dream come true, and DPR despite a lazy period (but busy for you), is back in the business strong as never before. Money rules ;0)
Excellent 2009 with plenty of new content, hopefully a real AF test, more lens test and if possible more "human" content just like you did with your entry in the blog. Numbers matters, but a valid point made by trustful guys like you, is a must.
A last request. A couple of pros to take care of the forum, two real moderators that could clean deeply this nice place to exchange and learn.

Gidday Phil
I, for one, truly appreciate all the hard work and dedication by you and all your team at DPR.
Many thanks to you (and Amazon ... ) for providing this wonderful facility.
AND thanks to all those on the forums who have inspired me with their images and educated me with their knowledge, both freely given. In my small way, I try to help others as I can (I don't think anyone is about to be inspired by my photography!).
Wishing all at DPR all the very best for 2009 and the future.
Kindest regards, john.

Happoy anniversary, Merry Christmas, happy holidays, all the best. Phil, DP review is where I go first to find out the latest on digital photography. You have been the source for hours of informative reading, and you are the first place I turn to when a new piece of gear is in the offing. To you and all your associates, the happiest of new years, and here's to another great decade.

When I was at the age of 8, my father teached me photography by offering me his old 9X12 camera. That was an exciting experience for a little boy. When I was at the age of 50, DPReview teached me digital photography by offering me the knowledgde and an experienced community as well. And it does still today. Many thanks for parenting me in this amazing technology.
