The challenges system has always been about encouraging photography but we also wanted it to be a means of supporting and enhancing the challenges that already take place within specific forums. With this in mind, we’ve introduced Forum-associated challenges. Yesterday, we deployed this feature to DPReview for hosts to play with.
In recent weeks we have seen challenges established with themes that are relevant to specific forums – these have include brand-specific themes such as ‘Olympus DSLR Only’ or technique-specific themes like ‘Strobist’ or ‘Worthless Made Priceless’. Naturally these would have been particularly welcomed in the Olympus SLR Talk, Lighting Technique, and Retouching Forum, respectively.
To allow Challenge Hosts to make stronger links with those forums, they now have the option to specify which forums their challenge is particularly relevant to. Associating a challenge with a forum causes two things to happen to the recently introduced challenge widget that appears at the top of the forum pages. Firstly, an associated challenge will appear more frequently in the widget so that users of that forum get to see the most relevant challenges but also, an associated challenge will start to appear when it first opens, rather than when it has finished. This way, users of the relevant forum will be much more aware that there’s a challenge aimed at them that they may wish to enter.
Winners of all challenges will continue to appear across the site but with the creation of associated challenges, there’s a way of promoting challenges for the communities that have built up within individual forums.

Mmmmhhmmmm... you got that right girlfriend. BBM likey!

the challenges seem very "clubby" already, with people using first name basis comments on their voting - objectivity suffers, imo. does DPC really need to move even further onto the slippery slope of "friends" currying favor for positive voting? just a thought.

This seemed like a good idea, until oldbimmercoupe brought up a valid point (the 2nd comment). Objectivity is important, as friends votes only does a disservice to what is considered beautiful, from its own merits.
The thing that might be a positive to it being more visible to a particular forum may be the fact that that particular forum may have more experience dealing with a common topic of interest. But then again, when something is good, it should be good across all borders. So good point oldbimmercoupe.
Take care,
Huy

oldbimmercoupe: This feature will not affect the objectivity during voting since it does not promote any particular entry. During voting, all the information regarding who took the shot and with what camera are hidden to ensure objectivity. Also, comments are activated only after voting is completed, so it does not affect the voting phase. If you do feel that there is a chance of gaming the voting results, kindly point it to us using the feedback form. Thanks!

Please keep it simple !

I agree that this will only make things more 'clubby'... voting wont be fair, will be skewed!

I haven't a clue what this is but it sounds like beating a dead horse. Why doesn't the management leave the forums alone?

Is voting - of any kind - not 'skewed' ALWAYS?
Voting on artwork, be it films, painting or photography is as silly as it gets. People start taking it far too seriously and it turns from creating art from your heart to some sort of competitive silliness.

When I enter an image that has won a national award and provided over $3,000 in additional income - and it gets a mess of 1 and 1+ ratings, along with the expected 4-5 ratings then I know something is really wrong! Then I notice what a small number of votes actually were involved in the total.
Now if I had 5 different e-mail addresses - and my wife had 5 different e-mail addresses - and my four adult children voted - I would win a lot more than I lost. Then add in a half dozen "friends" and you get some very funky results!
Heck, just a group of 10 could raise havoc with the "judging". In short, it looks like you are doing this solely for click count and MONEY as opposed to the betterment of photography. Shame on you. Makes me wonder why I have supported you for over 8 years and 11,000 responses!
Solution for PHOTOGRAPHY as opposed to your personal wealth: FEWER challenges with MORE votes each. Sorry. Your "challanges" is misguided. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ is not the answer.

I used to post in challenges where I would host the photo and keep the ability to remove it from the web once the challenge is over. I am actually surprised that DPR is getting into photo hosting/sharing business. To me, this signals an unwelcome change in direction of this website.

I am with Steve.
Fewer challenges and mode votes. Also - move from popular vote to expert vote. How? -
1. Give more weight to votes of people who did well in challenges.
2. Give more weight to the votes of people who did well in voting.
Take care

Hi to all.. voting on specific site was not actually given attention most of the surfers, unless it is a very interesting one. So i suggest, you need to have the power of attracting or holding one's attention. Make it more interesting, That's all Thanks...

what happens to the photos once the challenges are over? I could not find anywhere on this site that answered this question.
