Our latest subtle improvement to the forums are keyboard shortcuts, probably doesn't sound significant but if you're a forum regular you'll probably find that the new shortcuts make navigating and responding to a thread a much quicker and easier proposition. Additionally we've tried to keep the shortcuts consistent with those we've had in place for a while in Challenges. The available shortcut keys change depending on the message you're looking at (and if you're logged in), there's a legend available at the bottom of the page:

PS. These only work in threaded view, we'll be adding more shortcuts to other forum pages shortly.
UPDATE: New shortcuts now available on the individual forum pages.

I'd really like to see j/k as next and previous messages. it's a lot less finger twisting and it's a fairly common standard. especially for vi users. I believe gmail and reader use that as standard too. Anyway, very welcome improvements.

I really like all the other changes, but the shortcuts collide with Mozilla's Find-As-You-Type. Is there any way to disable them?
Thanks,
Prog.

An excellent improvement! (I've only just spotted the shortcut information at the bottom of the screen).
I am constantly impressed by the continuing innovation, without gimmicks, which this site offers. Thanks!

I like the feature, and I like to use it with my touchpad on my laptop for scrolling up and down... but everytime I use the touchpad's side-scrolling (left-to-right or right-to-left) it goes forward and backward. Pretty annoying, so if you could disable the arrow navigation and just use "f" and "p" for going forward and backward, I think it would be much nicer.
As it is it can be frustrating.

This is an excellent and considerate development.
After years of using a laptop touchpad, I've come to value keyboard shortcuts and wish this was implemented more on the web, especially on other navigation-heavy sites, such as the BBC.
Can DPr look at extending this to each forums main page, so that the browser focus can be shifted up or down each post via the arrow keys? A user would focus on the relevant post, hit return, and be taken into the post. No biggy, but that would be the natural progression.
PS - doesn't seem to interfere with my Firefox search as you type.
Cheers

Your new "preview" panel does not include the subject. You might think this unnecessary, but sometimes it is important to know whether the subject is going to be truncated.
Can you please add the subject to the preview?
thank you,

I just logged into the forum. You can only see one message. If you choose flat view, you see all the messages dispayed with text. This is an awful system and I will no longer be logging into the forums at DP review. I am hoping there is just a problem but it appears you have made a change for the worst. The shortcuts are great. The old layout was superior and allowed me to see the headline of every message without text. The next and previous buttons in thread view are horrible. if you wanted a shortcut, why did not not just allow us to type in the message number we want to view. Very dissappointed to say the least.
